After Jules Felix Coutan (French, 1848-1939), the artist best known for the &#34;Glory of Commerce&#34; sculptural grouping above the entrance to the Grand Central Terminal in NYC. Here, an Art Nouveau style bronze sculpture, 20th C., &#34;La Paix (Allegory of Peace),&#34; unsigned, on a heavy dark marble base. A gloriously winged female holds a sword atop a cornucopia of rich fruits. Her spectacular spread wings, confident demeanor, stance, and detailed drapery exude an air of satisfied determination. In fine condition with the exception of a scrape on her knee (see pic) which seems almost appropriate and intentional on her.

Coutan Statue: The Allegory of Peace

He&#39;s definitely got his eye on someone - maybe you?  We had a hard time wrangling this cherub into place for photography - he moves fast and wants to be surveying the scene from far above where he was originally stationed before we took him down, so apologies for the less than perfect photos that resulted as we tried to capture him head-on! He&#39;s bronze, and heavy, with a plan of action, lots of movement, perfect proportions, a detailed open wing span, and an adorable demeanor.  And as you can see from his feet, he originally came affixed to a base of some sort, but make no mistake - there&#39;s no containing this character when he&#39;s on a mission.

Cupid

This large landscape shows a peaceful scene of sunset over a winding stream, with birch trees to frame left and a marsh stretching to the wooded horizon. A rainbow of pastels balanced by darker areas, all in free brushstrokes. Signed S. Wencke in lower left. Sophie Wencke-Meinken (1874-1963) was born to a shipyard owning family in the German port town of Bremerhaven, where as an adult she participated in launch ceremonies. Water was a recurring element in her works, unsurprisingly. After studying art in Dresden, she moved to Worpswede, home to an artists&#39; colony that drew inspiration from the surrounding moors and marshes. This piece is in excellent condition, in a gilt over gesso wooden frame that has areas of wear, as shown. Note decal on back, perhaps indicating a former owner or that it was being held for a buyer.

Signed Sophie Wencke Original Landscape Painting

A Juno-esque young woman carries a bundle of just-cut hay on her shoulder, skirt knotted at her waist, feet bare, a solemn gaze on her slightly frowning face. Another woman works behind her bundling sheaves in this large piece filled with beautifully rendered textures. Signed in the lower right corner of the print by artist Jules Breton, with the location Courrières and the date 1877, and again in the lower left margin in pencil. He also added a small remarque in the bottom center margin, a self-portrait sketched in ink. Printer L Daughtry signed in pencil, lower right in the margin, and also hid his initials in the lower left of the print. Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton, 1827-1906, was born in Courrières, France. His father&#39;s death left the family in debt for the first time ever, and Breton became aware of what life was like for the farmworkers and especially the gleaners who were the last to gather what was left after the harvest. His empathy for them led to his focus on these women as primary subjects, and he depicted them in groups and as solitary figures, often at sunset as their back-breaking day came to an end. His work in the tradition of the French Realism movement of the mid-late 1800s was collected by various wealthy Americans, and has undergone a recent reassessment, leading to recognition of him as a defining artist of the 19th century, who drew on traditions of academicism and naturalism. Jules Breton &#34;In the Fields&#34; Antique Etching

Five colorful moths, with a crackle overlay effect, to hang as a grouping, or pairs, or singly, plus a duplicate of one. The artist&#39;s signature is in the lower left of one, and says Drawn & Engraved by R P Nodder. These are repros of R.P. Nodder&#39;s naturalist works, which encompassed birds, butterflies, shells, reptiles, sea life, and small mammals. Richard Polydore Nodder (1793 - 1820) was the son of Frederick Nodder, also an artist and naturalist. Both were the official botanical painters to George III. Frederick began the massive 24-volume &#34;Naturalist&#39;s Miscellany,&#34; which his widow Elizabeth and son Richard completed after his death. This set has facsimile plate marks, and is framed under glass in black wood frames with gold beaded inner rims, and some areas of chipping, as shown.

Beautifully crafted handmade globes from Kalifano feature semi-precious inlaid stone, with 24K gold-plated brass latitude and longitude lines. This 12&#34; globe has seas of lapis, while mother-of-pearl, turquoise, jasper, aventurine, and other hard stones represent the countries. Brushed antique silver stand, with a compass at the meeting of the tri-part footed legs. Excellent condition. Clean with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth; do not use cleaning products.

Kalifano 12&#34; Gemstone Globe

We don&#39;t know what they&#39;re up to, but a variety of figures cavort through this large original oil on mason board. A satyr feeds himself grapes with a scantily-clad trio dancing behind him, while in the deep background a pair, one of whom appears to be a faun, are entwined near a columned folly. Signed by the artist Sattersfield, and framed in a gilded distressed wooden frame. This is a large piece--bring appropriate vehicle.

Pocket Knives, etc.

A quintet of bird prints under glass, in narrow black wood frames with gilt inner rims. Only one has the artist, title, and printer info remaining at the bottom of the plate--it&#39;s possible the others were trimmed at some point and this info discarded. But four have the species and artist on the back in original decals, under the label of the store that sold them, Denholm & McKay Company, a department store in Worcester which closed in the early 1970s. Two are from originals by John Gould (1804-1881). Another, indicated as Vig. & Horsf, is from Gould&#39;s wife, Elizabeth. John Gould trained as a taxidermist and became the preservationist at the Zoological Society of London. It was there that his focus turned to birds. He published his first folio volume, &#34;A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains,&#34; and went on to catalog the birds of the world, providing pencil sketches and notes to the artists who created the works. These included his wife Elizabeth, and, after her death, Henry C. Richter, a renowned illustrator and lithographer, credited on one piece here. His contributions to ornithology were significant, and he identified several species Charles Darwin brought back from his voyages. Another artist represented here is Edward Blyth, 1810-1873, a zoologist who worked mainly in India, and who was also known as a predecessor to Darwin, being an early proponent of the concept of natural selection.

Set of Five Vintage Bird Prints, Two from J. Gould

A burst of lively movement. An exemplary gift of artistry, imagination and remarkable skill exhibited here. Colored ink wash work, on paper, framed under glass. An ink wash painting (水墨畫, shuǐmòhuà) is a traditional Chinese art form merging calligraphy with painting, using black ink in varying concentrations to create monochrome, expressive landscapes or subjects on paper/silk (source: wikipedia.) Depicted here, numerous cranes gliding above and resting on pine trees - both symbolizing longevity and peace.  The painting includes calligraphy with the Chinese characters "TE E7*", which translates to "A Hundred Cranes Presenting Auspiciousness". 
Based on our information, origin ,and place of purchase date (all anecdotal) we believe this piece to be very early, but of course  we have not seen out of frame or had it formally authenticated. It needs some care as minor fading and buckling are starting, but still carefully preserved under glass and presented in a traditional Chinese style frame.

Large Framed Chinese Ink Drawing

A gloriously glazed garden stool/table saturated in bursts of various shades of blue and green that, when hit with sunlight, the surface resembles the cosmos on a starry summer night.  Also one side exhibits an almost psychedelic swirl of coagulation resembling oil in a mud puddle. With long cut-out holes on each side for lifting/moving. Very heavy. Made in Vietnam.

Square Blue Garden Stool

A collector&#39;s miscellany of materials, dating from the mid-1600s to the 1940s. Includes a small booklet of seven lectures read in Latin by Robert Sanderson, the Bishop of Lincoln and lecturer at the divinity school at Oxford University, dated 1646; an Almanac from 1890; a Town and Country Magazine from July 1794; various letters, book plates, a medical manual, and more. Colorful lot of art glass also includes a handblown millefiore shade for a small lamp, from Murano. Two hand-thrown pottery vases in drippy glaze, one signed and dated 2000, both in excellent condition. Heavy bud vases, one olive green and one amethyst, both on substantial clear bottoms. Two pieces that echo the look of translucent stone: a lovely swirled sea-glass green dish and an agate-inspired ashtray; the dish has one small chip, as shown. A vintage blue bottle with etched lettering, from the W.H. Cawley company of Somerville, NJ. A striking cobalt bud vase on 6-petaled clear base. Bring box and packing material.

This group of decoys has spent a lot of time on the water, and it shows in their desirable patina. A matched pair, with keels and glass eyes intact, and a few hints of paint remaining around the heads. And a solo swimmer, appears to be a pintail, with blue-ish beak and glass eyes, no keel, metal banding around base. A duct tape patch on one side, as shown. A highly collectible raft of ducks.

Trio of Vintage Decoys

U.S. Army Engineer Aviation units played a critical role in the Southeast Pacific theater during WWII. They were able to construct airfields (sometimes in as little as 6 days) and support bases in support of land-based aircraft, leaving carrier-based aircraft dedicated to protecting naval assets. As General Douglas MacArthur said, &#34;This is an air and amphibious war; because of the nature of air and amphibious operations, it is distinctly an engineer&#39;s war.&#34; The 863rd EAB, formed in 1942, constructed and maintained runways in New Guinea, built bridges and other infrastructure in the Philippines, and also provided combat support to infantry forces. The obstacles were massive: heat, tropical diseases, terrain, lack of roads and docks, not to mention the necessity of performing heavy construction under fire, as in the construction of piers in Manila while under Japanese attack. This album contains several hundred photographs, documenting the work and also daily life for the crewmen. (Note Gary Cooper and other Hollywood figures of the day paying visits.) We believe these albums were produced for those who served in the EABs, and were specific to each battalion. Overall good collection, and a true collector&#39;s item.

WWII Photo Album, 863rd Engineer Aviation Battalion

This signifiant piece is a very high-quality lithographic reproduction of a plate from the Robert Havell edition of John James Audubon&#39;s &#34;Birds of America.&#34; The volumes were self-published by Audubon in the double elephant folio size of 26.5&#34; X 39.5&#34;; this print is slightly larger. Audubon, 1785-1851, needs little introduction--his comprehensive studies of North American birds are iconic. Born in Haiti, Audubon was the illegitimate son of a sugar plantation owner and a chambermaid. Raised by his father in France, he immigrated to America as a teenager, using a false passport his father gave him, to avoid being drafted into the Napoleonic wars. His interest in nature combined with his rapidly developing skills as an artist, and with his innovative means of staging birds he had shot so as to draw them most accurately. He traveled the country, observing birds, their behavior, their surroundings, and began to create the watercolors that would eventually be collected in his monumental &#34;Birds of America.&#34; Truly monumental--each of the 453 plates was double elephant folio-sized, in order to show the birds at life size. He was obliged to raise the money himself for the publication of the 4-volume work over a period of years, which he did by selling subscriptions and paintings, to the tune of just over 2M in today&#39;s dollars. Robert Havell Jr., an artist in his own right, handled all but 10 of Audubon&#39;s 453 plates for Birds of America. A painter, printmaker, engraver, colorist, he was hired by his father, the publisher Audubon had engaged, to make the printing plates and hand-color the prints, after Audubon&#39;s originals. Havell Jr. and Audubon became friends over the course of the collaboration, and likely influenced each other as their subjects were often similar. Period oak frame, with two drill holes at each bottom corner, as shown. The print is in excellent condition.

Double Elephant Folio-sized Audubon &#34;Stanley Hawk&#34; Lithograph

Precisely constructed and detailed gaff-rigged schooner, also known as a tern schooner. These cargo ships were in use from roughly 1880 to 1920, requiring crews of up to 8, and were used especially in the coastal lumber trade. These beautiful vessels were aptly named after the Scottish word scoon, meaning to skim along the water. Ours appears to have rigging intact, and is furnished with transom and dinghy, anchor, fore and aft hatches, wheel, and bowsprit embellished with gold scrolls. The model sits in a glass case with metal base and edges, in need of a cleaning. Some water spotting to sails. You will need to bring help--this is a large item.

A quartet of bookend pairs, with a classical bent. The winged man-headed lion guarded the gates to Assyrian King Ashurnasirpal II&#39;s city of Nimrud and is reproduced here in plaster with gold-color finish. A pair of plaster temple facades, with warriors in the pediments, and a pair of highly polished black marble column bases. And a brass pair from the Philadelphia Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia, with a torch set before a row of books, symbolizing the light of learning. Vintage Bookend Pairs

An Afghan or Pakistani 14&#34; square low tea table still retaining much of its original hardware, paint, and charm. Fairly traditional models from the late 19th/early 20th C feature small handle-less cups (piala) and brass strapping, accents, and oriental motifs. The tables are central to the social, hospitable, and, often daily, ritual of serving green or black tea. Paired here with a woven 16&#34;stool. These low stools and chairs are very functional and are designed for the Indian sub-continent culture which involves sitting cross-legged for long periods of time. The low chair takes away the pressure from the knees. A 13&#34;W hinged wooden half circle box/bowl with tooled leather lid, clasp and handle. Two tall 22&#34;H vintage perforated brass incense burners. A small 55&#34; x33&#34; colorful wool prayer rug in fair condition - some wear, needs cleaning!  A well worn 16&#34;H copper ewer/aftafa/dallah missing its stopper, and a darling 5.5&#34; gold-lined small red enamel tea pot. And tassels, of course, always symbolic, ever-present.

LPs 4: Miscellaneous Genres

A tremendous amount of storage space in this rustic, ornately carved bookcase, possibly from Gujarat. It appears to be an upcycled or repurposed Indian door frame in very raw teak that has been transformed into shelving. Vintage 19th C style features layers of (we believe) machine-carved foliage, rosettes, serpents and geometric scrollwork throughout.  U-shaped base is extremely rustic but strong and sturdy.  Fixed shelving providing deep storage.  Back panel exhibits some cracks but should not affect function. A simple thin wood brace might help. 
Basement wide exit. Large and heavy piece, must bring help and appropriate vehicle.

New England Souvenir Items

The star here is the cast metal toothpick holder, with a manually operated woodpecker that perches on a log and dips to retrieve a single toothpick in its bill. Indicates Berlin, NH on one side. Some wear as expected with age and use. Two Maine souvenir plates, both in excellent condition, the larger having perforated rim and holes in foot for hanging; the smaller in a scallop shell shape. Both with full-color transfer images and some gold highlights. And a porcelain black bear and cub, origin unknown, but appropriate for northern New England--and these days, even in urban areas.
