Mercedes was born in Birmingham, England to Herbert and Janet Deeley and made her way to Canada in 1945. She developed an interest in painting and established herself as an accomplished modern artist in the 1960&#39;s and proceeded to advance her art over many decades. She exhibited her work in many shows and has paintings in several public art galleries and museums. As well as being a member of the RCA she also was a member of OSA and CSPWC and holder of the Queen Elizabeth Medal, 1977.

A respected member of his community, Meeko was known for his generosity and would often host fellow artists travelling through Kuujjuaraapik. He strove to share his traditional knowledge with the younger generation and often took school groups out on the land, instructing the children in survival skills. An active member of the church, Meeko also served on the community’s justice committee.

Best known as a talented sculptor and printmaker, Meeko was also noted for his skills in snow sculpting. He participated in national competitions held in Quebec in 1977 and 1982. In 1987, he and his wife, Lucy, participated in an international competition held in Rovaniemi, Finland — they were awarded first prize in the “figurative expression” category for their efforts. Meeko also represented Nunavik at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, where he once again demonstrated his snow sculpting skills. He was later recognized for his efforts by Makivik Corporation and was honoured with an award for achievement in 1994.

Meeko’s work is held in important collections across the country such as that of the Royal Ontario Museum, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Canadian Museum of Civilization, and has also been featured in international exhibitions in Jerusalem, Richmond, Virginia, and Indiana, Pennsylvania.

Meeko’s work first gained attention when one of his experimental prints was included in the initial Arctic Quebec print collection, released in 1972. Selected by the Kuujjuaraapik Cooperative to participate in a seven-week printmaking workshop delivered by Bob Paterson in Puvirnituq, Meeko attended the workshop with his wife, Lucy, and his townsman Adamie Papialuk.

AUSTRIAN, 1892-1950

 Lorenzl apprenticed at a foundry at the military storage complex Vienna Arsenal, where he became skilled in bronze casting. Rather than working in traditional metalwork industries such as construction, Lorenzl turned his hand to sculpture. His work celebrated the female form, depicting graceful dancers. Like his contemporaries Ferdinand Preiss (1882-1943) and Demetre Chiparus (1886-1947), Lorenzl’s figurines were either made in bronze or chryselephantine, which is a combination of various materials in sculpture including, ivory, bronze, gold, and silver.

Early in his career, Lorenzl began working for the Austrian ceramics company Goldscheider, alongside Stephan Dakon (1904-1992). By the 1930s, both artists were the principal designers at Goldscheider.

Notable designs for Goldscheider include Captured Bird (c. 1922)—often referred to as Butterfly Wings—modeled after the 1920s actress and dancer Niddy Impekoven; the Egyptian Dancer (1922), also known as Odalisque, which represents a temple dancer from Verdi&#39;s Aida; and the Arabian Dancer (c. 1925). From the mid-1920s, Lorenzl began to focus more on nude sculptures, a change from his earlier designs which generally featured clothed women, in dancers’ dress, for which he is best known.

Over the course of his career, Lorenzl also worked for the Viennese companies Keramos, Wiener Kunstkeramik, and Porzellanmanufaktur AG, as well as the German firms Hertwig and Cortendorf.

Lorenzl passed away in 1950 in Vienna.

Irving Amen, painter and printmaker, was born in New York City on 25 July 1918. He was awarded a scholarship to the Pratt Institute when he was fourteen years old and he spent seven years in life classes perfecting his drawing. He also studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Amen’s first exhibition was held at the New School for Social Research and his second at the Smithsonian Institution in 1949. In 1950 he traveled to Paris to study for a year. Upon his return to the United States, he had one man shows in New York and Washington, DC.

Amen taught sculpture and printmaking classes at the Pratt Institute in 1961 and at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana in 1962. Commissions included a Peace Medal in honor of the Vietnam War and designs for twelve stained glass windows, each sixteen feet high, depicting the Twelve Tribes of Israel, for the Agudas Achim Synagogue in Columbus, Ohio.

He was a member of the American Color Print Society, Artists Equity, Audubon Artists, Boston Printmakers, International Institute of Arts and Letters, International Society of Wood Engravers (Zurich), and the Society of American Graphic Artists. Amen's work was included in numerous international and national exhibitions and in 1949 he was included in the exhibition Master Prints at the Museum of Modern Art.

Amen’s work is represented in the Albertina Museum, Vienna; Bezalel National Museum, Jerusalem; Bibliotheque nationale, Paris; Bibliotheque Royale, Brussels; Museum of Fine Art Boston; Cincinnati Museum of Art; Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; Library of Congress, Washington; Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, New York; New York Public Library; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Smithsonian American Art Museum; and Stadtische Museum, Wilberfeld, <span class"bg-warning nswreasons" id"rid-126">Germany</span>.

Irving Amen died in Coconut Creek, Florida on 21 November 2011.
