Description

Sir Charles-Michel de Salaberry and Laura Secord were featured on 2013 25-cent "War of 1812" coins. John A. Macdonald was honored on a 2015 Toonie celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth. A pair of 2013 Laura Secord & Sir Charles-Michel de Salaberry 25 cent quarter coins, one red colored and one frosted non-colored. The coins are brilliant uncirculated, directly from mint rolls, they are sealed in non-PVC bags to prevent touching, scratching or tarnishing. Sir John Alexander Macdonald, prime minister of Canada 1867–73 and 1878–91, lawyer, businessman, politician (born 10 or 11 January 1815 in Glasgow, Scotland; died 6 June 1891 in Ottawa, ON). John A. Macdonald was Canada’s first and second-longest serving prime minister (19 years). He set wide-ranging policies that continue to influence the country today. Macdonald helped unite the British North American colonies in Confederation and was a key figure in the writing of the British North America Act — the foundation of Canada’s Constitution. He oversaw the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) and the addition of Manitoba, the North-West Territories, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island to Confederation. However, his legacy also includes the creation of the residential school system for Indigenous children, the policies that contributed to the starvation of Plains Indigenous peoples, and the “head tax” on Chinese immigrants. Laura Secord was a Canadian heroine of the War of 1812, famous for walking over 32 kilometers to warn British forces of an impending American attack. Her warning helped lead to a British victory at the Battle of Beaver Dams, preventing the invasion of Canada. Today, her name is also widely associated with the popular Canadian chocolate company that was named after her. War hero: In 1813, Secord overheard American plans to ambush a British outpost and decided to warn the British. She made a grueling 32-kilometer (20-mile) journey on foot through American-occupied territory to alert Lieutenant James FitzGibbon. Victory at Beaver Dams: Her actions allowed British forces and their allies, including hundreds of Indigenous warriors, to prepare for the American attack, resulting in an American surrender and the prevention of a larger invasion. Later life: Despite her heroic deed, Secord did not receive public recognition or a pension during her lifetime. She and her family lived in poverty for many years after the war. Modern legacy: Secord's story became more widely known after her death, and she is now frequently honored in Canada. The Laura Secord Chocolates company was established on the centennial of her walk, and the name has become synonymous with her bravery. Why is Charles de Salaberry important? Through his role in the victory at the battle of the Châteauguay, de Salaberry became a celebrated and indeed legendary historical figure. He has even been compared to Leonidas, the king of Sparta who, with 300 hoplites, succeeded in turning back the army of Xerxes at the pass of Thermopylae (circa 480 B.C.)
