Description

Materials: Wood (Bornean ironwood) Measurements: 13.5"W x 6.25"D x 3"H (approx.) Weight: 322 grams (approx.) Origin: Borneo, Asia Year: Vintage Condition: This hand-made ironwood ritual bowl is in very good condition for its age and use. It has great patina, and signs of light wear from age. Please check all the pictures for condition details. About the Artifact This tribal ceremonial bowl is a vintage artifact of the Dayak from Borneo Island, Asia. It is hand-carved from Bornean ironwood, with a hornbill head handle and a pouring spout. It is used in ceremony offering by the indigenous people (the Dayak). Borneo (also called Kalimantan) is the third-largest island in the world. The island is politically divided among three states: the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, Indonesian Kalimantan, and the tiny nation of Brunei. The Dayak are one of the Indigenous groups of Borneo. The indigenous religion has been given the name Kaharingan and may be said to be a form of animism, but is registered as a form of Hinduism in Indonesia. The great hornbill is a large bird, up to 51 inches long, with a 60 inches wingspan and a weight of 4 kg. Due to its large size and colour, and importance in many tribal cultures and rituals, the great hornbill is named the state bird by the governments. The bird is threatened by poachers who target it for its beak and by farmers encroaching upon their habitat. Pickup category timeslot {A}
